Washington (dpa) – President Barack Obama has not received an invitation to former first daughter Chelsea Clinton’s wedding, and he said on a daytime talk show Thursday that he agrees with that decision.
This weekend, Chelsea Clinton, 30, will reportedly tie the knot to longtime boyfriend and investment banker Marc Mezvinsky, 32, in small-town Rhinebeck, New York after weeks of headlines on the secrecy of the planning and controversy over the guest list.
“Hillary and Bill properly want to keep this as a thing for Chelsea and her husband,” Obama said on The View, in the first
appearance of a sitting president on a daytime television programme.
Obama said he would do the same thing for his two young daughters, now 12 and 9. He acknowledged inviting him would disrupt the celebration.
“It would be tough enough with one president at a wedding,” Obama said as he joked about the Secret Service unwrapping presents and going to extreme measures to ensure the safety of wedding.
Bill Clinton served as president from 1993-2001 and his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton is US secretary of state. Despite her famous parents, Chelsea Clinton has stayed largely out of the public eye except for appearances during her mother’s presidential bid.
